Expanded Biography
I am currently a full-time staff physician in pediatric neurosurgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, with staff appointments at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Areas of focus encompass all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery, including brain tumors, vascular abnormalities of the brain and spine, spinal dysraphisms, congenital disorders of the central nervous system, craniofacial abnormalities, hydrocephalus, epilepsy and trauma. My patient load is roughly 20 operative cases per month, with participation in the management of about 40 cases per month. The complexity is on the order of the most difficult cases seen in the practice of pediatric neurosurgery. My area of sub-specialization includes pediatric spine and craniofacial problems. I am actively involved in the Craniofacial team, where we are national leaders in the treatment of children with craniosynostosis. I am also actively involved in the treatment of congenital, degenerative and traumatic disorders of the spine. I am the neurosurgical representative on the Trauma Executive Committee and am actively involved in the treatment of these children and in modifying our treatment paradigms. We are currently forming a model center for the treatment of pediatric brain and spine injuries, and I am the principal investigator on a grant submitted to the NIH to fund this. I am also the sponsoring surgeon of the Boston local chapter of Thinkfirst, a national brain and spinal cord injury prevention program. I have recently been awarded a grant from the Community Child Health Fund to fund the Thinkfirst chapter. I also have an active practice in sports-related injuries. I have developed protocols, along with the neuroanesthesia team, for the use of intraoperative MRI in the treatment of neoplasms in the pediatric patient population, and am actively involved in surgery in this area.
