Dr. Voss was raised in Marshfield, Wisconsin. He graduated with honors from Princeton University, and spent the next two years at the University of Heidelberg doing research as a Fulbright Scholar. He then returned to the University of Wisconsin, where he completed his doctorate and attended medical school. He came to Boston to continue his research in cancer biology and gene therapy. Dr. Voss completed a radiology residency at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and did his pediatric radiology fellowship at Children's Hospital, Boston. He remained on the Harvard Medical School faculty after his fellowship, and is active in the Children's Oncology Group, where he serves on the steering committee of the Hodgkins disease committee and as the Clinical Imaging Director of the Phase I Consortium. He also chairs the Radiology Department QI Committee and the hospital's Radiation Safety Committee.
