John G.  Meara , MD, DMD, MBA

John G. Meara is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Childrens Hospital Boston. He is Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School as well as Associate Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine also at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Meara is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame; was awarded his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and earned a doctorate in dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Melbourne Business School at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Dr. Meara completed his otolaryngology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and subsequently completed his plastic surgery training at Brigham and Womens Hospital and Childrens Hospital. He was the craniofacial fellow at The Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. In 2003, after working at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for three years, the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne recruited Dr. Meara to fill the newly created position of full-time Director of the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2005 he was promoted to Chief of Surgery at Royal Childrens Hospital. In August 2006 Dr. Meara returned to Boston and was appointed Plastic Surgeon-in-Chief at Childrens Hospital Boston. Dr. Meara has a special interest in cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies. He participates in cleft lip and palate, craniofacial and head & neck programs. In these multi-specialty environments Dr. Meara has worked closely with colleagues to improve patient care and education through comprehensive and cross-disciplinary approaches to the evaluation and management of patients with complex conditions. Dr. Meara has over 60 peer-reviewed publications in this field. Since 2002, he has presented at 49 national or international lectures or grand rounds presentations on craniomaxillofacial surgery, cleft lip repair, and other pediatric plastic surgery topics. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Dr. Meara is also the Chair for the ACS Legislative Committee. He currently serves as Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Training Program at Harvard Medical School. He is the Director of the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change within the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is the Co-Director of the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship in collaboration with Partners in Health. Its purpose is to train leaders who will further promote surgical care, education, and research pertinent to global surgery. He is also a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Meara has performed extensive community service related to his professional work in Ecuador, India, Vietnam, Jordan, China, Honduras, Peru, Kuwait, Chechnya and Haiti. He has been on numerous medical missions with Operation Smile, Health Volunteers Overseas, Por Cristo, and more recently, with Partners in Health. He has a particular interest in the global surgical burden of disease and improving health outcomes globally. Dr. Meara is currently involved in several projects looking at burden of surgical disease, surgical capacity assessment, and the use of technology for post operative patient management and the economic impact of untreated surgical disease. Dr. Mearas domestic research includes a pilot project which examines how to define and measure value for patients and health systems. He is currently working in collaboration with members of the Harvard Business School and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Through this pilot project the goal is to determine the cost of cleft lip and palate care and to scale this technique to the department and eventually to the hospital level to drive value improvement efforts.
