Type 1 Diabetes Program

The Diabetes Program at Boston Children’s Hospital is dedicated to empowering children to lead a normal life through the effective management of their diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to use glucose (sugar) to provide energy. Diabetes can either be caused by too little insulin (type 1 diabetes) or a combination of too little insulin and resistance to the action of insulin (type 2 diabetes).

The most common form of diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults is type 1 diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes(also known as juvenile diabetes)is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells of the body, where it is used as a source of fuel. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the cells. Instead, it builds up in the bloodstream and makes blood sugar levels very high.  Children with type 1 diabetes must have daily injections of insulin to keep their blood sugar levels within the normal range.

Managing your child’s diabetes can be a challenging task, but in our program, you have access to our entire team of experts. We’ll help you with medical evaluation, dietary consultation, education, counseling and behavior modification and long-term care.

We see children with type 2 diabetes in our Type 2 Diabetes Program.
