Education Core | Qualitative Research

As part of the Institutional Centers for Clinical and Translational Research’s Design and Analysis Education Series, this 4 session, six hour course will give attendees a working knowledge of qualitative research approaches and methods for use in pediatric re-search. This is an applied course; participants are requested to come with a qualitative research question in mind for use in course exercises. It is also an advanced course and assumes an introductory level knowledge of Qualitative Research.

Topics will include:

  • What is qualitative research? A working definition
  • Design, use and analysis of three different commonly used qualitative
  • approaches: Grounded Theory, Phenomenology Ethnography
  • Mixed methods research: qualitative and quantitative
  • Design and use of three common qualitative data collection and analysis methods: Interviews, Focus groups, Surveys
  • Key factors in Rigor and validity in qualitative research

Target Audience

This course is designed for pediatric researchers: Investigators and assistants, junior faculty, fellows, residents, and others who wish to expand their research repertoire by incorporating qualitative approaches/methods.
