How does it work?

We've partnered with Grand Rounds, a leading healthcare organization in connecting patients to experts, no matter where you are. When you request an online second opinion, you will be assigned a personal care coordinator and staff physician from Grand Rounds. They will guide you through the medical records collection process, handle all other logistics, and answer questions along the way. A Boston Children's Hospital pediatric specialist will review your child's records remotely, answer your questions, and provide a detailed report — 7 to 10 business days after medical records are received. Everything is done online and securely, saving you the time and expense of traveling to Boston.

The first step to getting your online second opinion from a Boston Children's physician is to create an account by clicking "Start My Second Opinion." You will be guided through a series of questions to complete your request. Simply provide your child's basic information, as well as the questions you would like answered by a Boston Children's physician. We'll take care of everything else.

If your child has a genetic component to their condition, has received genetic testing, or you are looking for more information on genetic testing please visit our Precision Medicine Service.

If the Boston Children’s expert assigned to your request determines that the case is not appropriate for an online evaluation, he/she will let your Grand Rounds care coordinator know and they will work with you on next steps.

How much does it cost?

An online second opinion from Boston Children’s costs $975 for Cancer & Blood Disorder conditions and $675 for all other conditions.

For more detail on Cancer & Blood Disorder cases, please see the FAQ section.

Currently, most health plans do not cover online second opinions or consultations, but you may elect to use your Health Care Saving Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

If the Boston Children’s physician reviewing the case suggests another review of pathology results, your personal care coordinator will contact you regarding next steps. Please note that an additional fee may be charged.
