The surgical residency program at Boston Children's Hospital provides training for residents with various levels of experience. We have ACGME-approved programs in pediatric surgery and surgical critical care. We have general surgical residents rotating at various PGY levels from general surgery programs in Boston. In addition, we have two residents at the junior level (PGY 2/3) who are here for a year from programs outside the Boston area. These are generally individuals considering pediatric surgery as a career.
- Referring colleagues: The Department of Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital is at the forefront of patient care, clinical innovation, and research, caring for an average of 7,000 outpatient visitors annually and performing more than 4,000 operative procedures each year.
- Pediatric Surgery Fellowship: Boston Children’s has a long and rich tradition of training the leaders in pediatric surgery. It is a two-year clinical training program for which we have three ACGME-approved positions: one resident selected to begin training on odd years and two residents to begin training on even years through the National Resident Matching Program. The applicant must have completed a general surgical training program and must be eligible to take the qualifying examination in general surgery given by the American Board of Surgery or the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
- Surgical Critical Care Fellowship: Boston Children's Hospital Department of Surgery sponsors three two-year fellowship positions in surgical critical care with a focus in health outcomes research. The position is for individuals considering a career in pediatric surgery who wish to augment their clinical experience with a focus in critical care and formal training in epidemiological methods. The program begins with a 12-month clinical rotation on the pediatric critical care wards. Eligible residents must have completed three years of their general surgical training in order to be board eligible. The fellowship is ACGME-approved, and it serves as a route to formally attain an ACQ in Surgical Critical Care through the American Board of Surgery.
- General Surgery Residents: Interns and senior residents rotate from several general surgical training programs in Boston. A limited number of six-month or full-year positions are available at the junior level for individuals considering a career in pediatric surgery.
