Meet Our Team

Principal Investigator

Koichi Yuki, MD Koichi Yuki, MD

Dr. Koichi Yuki obtained his M.D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan. After his initial medical training in Japan, he came to US and completed his surgical internship in the University of Hawaii, anesthesia residency in Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by pediatric anesthesia fellowship and pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship in Boston Children’s Hospital. He is currently an Associate Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and an Associate in Cardiac Anesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital. He did postdoctoral research fellowship under Drs. Timothy Springer and Motomu Shimaoka (Immune Disease Institute), and his laboratory research focuses on elucidation of sepsis pathophysiology and understanding the impact of anesthetics on perioperative immune function. In addition, he is interested in performing risk stratification of noncardiac surgery in patients with congenital heart disease.

Principal Investigator

Sophia Koutsogiannaki, PhD Sophia Koutsogiannaki, PhD

Education: Completed a 4-year degree program (BSc) in Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Earned her MSc in Applied Genetics and Biotechnology. After her Ph.D in Immunology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, she conducted a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and joined us in April, 2016.

Research Interests: Her research interests are innate immunity and inflammation in disease. She has very strong background of biophysical and biochemical characterization of protein-peptide and protein-protein interactions and immunotherapeutics. Her current research revolves around the role of β2 integrins in neutrophil-mediated tissue injury during sepsis. She is recently funded with the Anesthesia Research Distinguished Trailblazer Award for this project.

Hobbies: She spends most of her time in the lab doing research, writing papers and grant applications or attending training courses and seminars. When she has time, Sophia loves watching Criminal Minds, practicing yoga, cooking traditional Greek cuisine or going out with friends.

Others: Born in Crete, Greece, she is quite outgoing and helpful. Loves philosophical discussion and she is tough to beat.

Wei Wang, PhD Wei Wang, PhD

Education: Wei received a Ph.D. degree in Immunology from Southeast University, China in 2016. He joined us in July, 2016.

Research Interests: His research focuses on the role of β2 integrins on tumor recurrence and metastasis, and the impact of anesthetics in these processes.

Hobbies: n addition to research, Wei likes playing basketball, running, reading and listening to music.

Others: This is the first time for Wei to live abroad, but he quickly adapted to Boston life except beer.

Hua Zha, MD, PhD Hua Zha, MD, PhD

Education: Hui received her medical and doctoral degrees in Internal Medicine at Tongji Medical College /Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China in 2006. She is a pediatric intensive care physician at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College /Huazhong University of Science and Technology. She joined us in September, 2016.

Research Interests: Hui’s research focus is on phagocytosis and immunomodulation in critical illness. She is also interested in the motility of gastrointestinal tract.

Hobbies: Aside from experiments, Hui enjoys cooking, music, and computer.

Others: She is quite a determined person and quick learner.

Research Fellow

Kazumasa Tazawa, MD Kazumasa Tazawa, MD

Education: Kazu received his medical degree at Chiba University, Japan in 2005, and underwent anesthesia training in Saitama Medical Center/ Saitama Medical College, Japan. He was an anesthesia staff in Saitama Medical Center before he joined us in July, 2015.

Research Interests: His research focuses on understanding the effects of different anesthetic drugs on immune function. He wants to explore optimal anesthesia regimen for surgical procedure from immunological standpoint.

Hobbies When not in the lab, Kazu enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and friends, by walk, bike or train. He likes talking with friends over beer and wine, and watching any sports game on TV or at stadium.

Others He just had a new born baby and he is a father of three daughters. Often easily directed toward the bar.

Research Assistant

Matthew Chamberlain, BS Matthew Chamberlain, BS

Education: Matt received B.S. degrees in both Biology and Psychology from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA in 2015.

Research Interests: Matt has a variety of interests, including infection and disease, microbiology, immunology, and translational medicine.

Hobbies Outside of his lab work, Matt can be found running, hiking, or kayaking while exploring the environments of New England. He also enjoys stargazing and following developments in space exploration as well as watching a good psychological thriller. His goal is to become a pediatric physician in the future.

Others: He is a multi-tasker and strong workforce in the lab. Learning how to drink coffee.

Priya Shukla Priya Shukla

Education: Priya is currently a high school senior at the Winsor School in Boston. She hopes to start college in the fall of 2017, studying biology and neuroscience.

Research Interests: Currently, her work in the Yuki Lab is focused on the impact of anesthetics on biofilm formation and the subsequent movement of various bacterial strains. Previously, she interned in the Radiology Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital, researching the effect of lobectomies on the movement of lung nodules and airways.

Hobbies In addition to her lab work, Priya can be found coxing boats on the Charles River for Winsor Varsity Crew! When not coxing or studying, she also loves traveling, hanging out with her friends, and training in Kung Fu.
